Starting from 1864
History of St. Peter’s (Snyder’s) Church
St. Peter’s began holding services in 1864 in the local school building. Like many local churches, we began as a union church in which both Lutheran and German Reformed (now U.C.C.) congregations shared the building with services rotating weekly between the two faiths while the ministers themselves rotated between different churches. Unlike most other area churches, St. Peter’s actually started as a Sunday School which began meeting in the local public school around 1800. The Sunday School was called Snyder’s after the family who donated the land for the school. Our church is still often referred to as Snyder’s Church.
The church building was constructed in 1874. Services were conducted in German until 1916. An addition with classrooms, a basement kitchen and dining area and expanded Sanctuary was added in 1939. The Church was rather famous locally for its maple tree grove where many church picnics were held. The union church wasn’t dissolved until 1969 with the Lutheran congregation joining two other local congregations to form Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Kreidersville. Our U.C.C. congregation remained in the existing church building.
Like many traditional churches, things have changed since the heyday of almost universal church attendance. But we continue to offer a Sunday School and Sunday worship services in which music plays an integral part. The one thing that has not changed in over 150 years is our friendly, family atmosphere in which all are welcome and all who come to worship with us quickly become part of our happy family. Visit any Sunday at 9:00 AM. You may just find that your family and ours make a perfect fit.
